Baywalk is definitely something to be missed
 BY MARY GRACE VALENCIA

The Manila Baywalk is definitely something to be missed. Although the place’s lifespan was cut short due to Mayor Lim’s abolition of the establishments around the area, the place has, for a time, become integral to Filipino city life and culture. Families, barkadas and lovers used to troop together beside the bay. People celebrated music by watching different bands playing different genres- from RnB, to Rock to Folk. Indeed, if there was a place that was truly alive with Filipino culture, this was it. Until the Manila city government headed by Mayor Alfredo Lim decided to remove it in late 2007.

Now, there is an attempt to bring to resurrect such happenings back to the Manila Bay area. What was once the Manila Baywalk is now known as the San Miguel Baywalk situated at its new location, the SM Mall of Asia’s Esplanade.

Since it is within Mall of Asia’s Vicinity, ample parking space is available unlike in the previous Baywalk. The place is also more secured what with the presence of more security personnel. Cleaner and more decent restrooms are also in place. Since it is developed by one of the biggest commercial corporations in the country, people can hope that more effort and budget will be put in maintenance and protection.

Pier One and Padi’s Point are among the establishments that can be found in the area. People can enjoy the great view and the refreshing breeze of the bayside while enjoying a glass of warming beer with friends. Other must-try food establishments are: Aling Tonya’s, Julie’s and Ihaw-Ihaw. Seafood lovers must not leave the place without trying the dampa-style Seafood Paluto Galore. Customers can enjoy choosing which fish, crab or oysters to cook and deciding if they would like it boiled, baked, fried or served with chili. Yum!

Added attractions of San Miguel Baywalk include the amusing cosplayers, the Missile Artwork and of course, the fireworks.

If one is looking for a place to just chill and relax, this is the place to go to next. One can talk with friends and family without having to shout over loud music. It is also a wonderful place to spend a quiet, romantic evening with a date. The main attraction here is, of course, the natural beauty of the bay. If people have enough discipline in themselves and respect for the place to keep it clean, then Filipinos can have a place like San Miguel Baywalk to enjoy and to cherish.

With San Miguel Baywalk, Manila’s distinct nightlife flavor can come to life again.
